“As a wildlife artist myself, I have often struggled to find not only the correct artist reference image, but an affordable one in the right setting!
It meant I took my camera and ventured out more and more in an attempt to find my own reference photos – and so I built a veritable library of images – a lot of which I’ll never get to use.
That’s when I decided to start my own micro stockphoto site – affordable for artists, with wildlife reference images for artists – all taken in the wild and shared with a license to empower other artists to use them in competitions and freely sell their artwork.
Birds are my favourite – so you’ll find a large selection of Southern African birds to choose from.”

The idea behind Artist Photos Africa is to share authentic images from the African bush. This means these images are not edited into submission, and aside from exposure tweaks, in fact very raw. I’ve also left them mostly uncropped – allowing you the freedom to compose your own work.
While quality control has been done to ensure detail and enough sharpness for drawing, where the subject is out of the ordinary, some quality might have been sacrificed to make the image available. Effort has been put into ensuring the usability of each image individually.
New photos will continuously be added to ensure fresh images and poses are made available. Kindly also use the contact form below for special requests.
